The founding partner of Harrogate-based estate agency, Feather Smailes Scales, which is based on Raglan Street in the town, has died.
Charles Smailes had more than 30 years experience in the local property sector. He set-up Feather Smailes Scales with Jim Feather and Peter Scales in 1994.
He was appointed president of the National Association of Estate Agents in 2005 and was also the first chairman of the board of the National Federation of Property Professionals.
Feather Smailes Scales announced that Smailes died on 9 October.
It added in a post: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our founding partner, Charles Smailes.
“Charles’ legacy will continue as we, as a firm carry forwards the values and principles that he held so dear.”
Charles guided NAEA/ARLA through a very difficult transitional period and was an excellent chairman of the newly formed Board. He believed passionately in working for the memberships of the organisations and he cared deeply about ‘good agency’. His great humour and enthusiasm were infectious. RIP Charles.

I am extremely sad to read of the death of Charles Smailes. He and I were joined at the hip for the period ARLA was merging with NAEA We had many meetings, and Charles’s wisdom and advice were greatly appreciated at a difficult time.
I would like to wish his family my sincere condolences, Charles was a man of strength, he was passionate about ensuring the membership worked ethically and the NFOPPP (now Propertymark) worked to the same high standard he set in his work and business. I will never forget the times we had together. I was very appreciative of his wise counsel. His charitable work I am certain will be reflected on by others.
May he rest in peace and never be forgotten by the organisation he led so well.
Robert Jordan
Past president of ARLA for 7 years.

A real professional estate agent and auctioneeer. Charles taught me a lot about agency when I first became involved with the NAEA and the standards he set for the industry were those we should all aspire to. His legacy will live on.

Very sad news.
I had the pleasure of meeting Charles many times over the years, and he always made me smile with his humorous stories.
He built a respected and professional business, admired by many – the industry has lost a really good guy!
RIP Charles.

This is such sad news. I worked with Charles for many years and his wisdom, experience and humour was greatly appreciated. ‘ He was a true professional’ is a term often quoted, but I think all would agree that this summed Charles up. Passionate about the industry and never afraid to say what he thought. My thoughts are with his wife Phyllis and sons’ Richard and Jonathan.
