Matterport, the American company whose ‘immersive’ technology includes virtual tours marketed to UK estate agents, has done a deal with Google.
From this summer, owners of Matterport Spaces will be able to publish directly to Google Street View.
The 3D images will be accessible almost instanteously on Google Maps and Google search results, serving to drive additional traffic to businesses’ websites.
For those agents that have not yet experienced Matterport products, the technology makes you feel as though you are actually there.
As well as being used by agents, Matterport products are popular with owners of venues such as hotels, as prospective guests can remotely navigate them and see what is on offer.
The use of Google Street View by Matterport customers is being described as a “game changer” by Google itself, which says that businesses will be able to market themselves much better.
But are there implications for estate and letting agents?
Private homes cannot be published on Google Street View. However, Matterport does think that there will be marketing opportunities for agents.
A spokesperson told us: “While the application might be more obvious in hotels and venues, the benefits would definitely be important where place-making plays a big part.
“If you were looking to purchase or rent a flat in a tower building, for instance, it would be invaluable as a customer to be able to look inside the building at the common areas / public spaces to get a sense of what the building is like, while being able to see the surrounding area in Google Street View.”
As an owner and advocate of the system, the possibilities for agents are huge, even if you simply have a tour created if your office with links to your website and multimedia content within the tour explaining your business and clients homes.

The use of this type of technology will become to norm. To quote Bill Gates “At the beginning very few people had mobile phones, now very people don’t have mobile phones, VR will be the same”. 360s reduce the number of live viewings while increasing the number of actual viewings, this is a considerable time saver at a time when overheads need to be reduced.
