Zoopla will not be filtering out references to tenancy fees from listings when the ban comes into force this Saturday.
It says that this is because some fees will still be permitted.
This is the case if they are spelled out in agents’ contracts – for example, charges to replace a lost key, or ‘default fees’ where a tenant is late in paying rent.
A spokesperson for Zoopla told EYE: “We’re committed to providing relevant guidance to our letting agents to help them comply with the Tenant Fees Act.
“As some fees are still permitted we will not be filtering out references automatically but will instead be providing guidance to agents about the information they should include in their listings in order to assist them in navigating their compliance requirements.
“We will however be updating the title ‘Fees Apply’ on all rental listings to ‘Tenancy Info’ in June.
“We have also released updates in our agency software to guide agents on the fee information they include in listings.
“The guidance we’re providing shouldn’t be relied on to ensure compliance. We recommend agents seek their own independent legal advice if they have any questions or concerns.”
Zoopla’s advice follows our story last Friday, and is in line with what Rightmove and OnTheMarket said.
Countdown to fees ban: One week to go and agents taking it right down to the wire
I wonder which agent is going to replace keys for a minimal fee that an idiotic Government deems reasonable? It will be easier and less time consuming to say “oh dear you have locked yourself out you need a locksmith and a decent bank account!” Welcome to the Government’s good intentions.
