Feeble feedback as CMA asks for comments on poorer tenants

An official blog on low-income tenants in the private rented sector has attracted only three comments.

It was published by the Competition and Markets Authority earlier this month, with the stated aim of raising awareness and encouraging support.

The CMA wants feedback on this specific blog before the end of this month so that it can start writing up its findings in April.

It is not clear what conclusions it could come to, based on such low feedback, or what recommendations it might come up with.

The blog does raise some important issues – not least that of letting agent fees.

It says: “People on low incomes can’t afford large upfront deposits and fees associated with moving into a private rented property or renewing a tenancy agreement.”

The blog also raises concerns about so-called revenge evictions.

It would, we think, be a good thing if agents were to make their views known.

It would, after all, be a shame if the industry did not make its voice heard on a subject that could well put agents at the centre of possible changes in the market.
