Eviction costs set to rise – but have your say

The costs of eviction are likely to rise for a second year running.

The Ministry of Justice is holding a consultation to hike the fee for possession claims in the county courts by £75 per claim.

The current costs came into force only last April when the Government raised fees for paper applications from £175, and for online claims from £100.

It is now proposed that the cost of filing a paper application would rise from £280 to £355 and the cost of filing an online application would go up from £250 to £325.

The consultation is part of an ongoing process which began last year.

In a foreword to the new paper, Justice minister Shailesh Vara acknowledges that “increasing court fees will never be popular or welcome”. However, the foreword also underlines that more money is needed to invest in court services.

The new charges would apply to private landlords, social landlords and mortgage lenders seeking possession of properties.

The consultation runs until February 27 and can be found here

Delays in the court system are by far the largest cost! If only I believed this would remove all the delays….
