A giant hot air balloon carrying a marketing message for a British estate agent was yesterday evening thought to be somewhere over Belgium after it broke loose in Yorkshire.
The balloon, bearing the Cornerstone logo, was apparently tethered in the Waterloo suburb of Huddersfield over the weekend.
Witnesses said it first ‘dived’ dangerously low over residential streets and then broke loose at 8.30pm on Saturday evening, heading straight for the clouds.
It has not been seen since.
Justin Dugdale, director of Cornerstone, apologised unreservedly to local residents.
He said that the balloon, or blimp, had been flying over its Denby Dale office safely for a week.
He told the local paper: “Needless to say we won’t be using the same firm again for any such marketing material. It appears that our blimp met its Waterloo in more ways than one.”
An escape attempt to Europe by someone?
