Another primary school whose children wanted to enjoy books has benefited from an estate agency group’s generosity.
This time it is Cherry Orchard school in Greenwich, London, whose new ‘reading chalet’ has now been furnished and equipped by the Acorn Book Club.
The ABC is the brainchild of Acorn Estate Agents, which last summer took on a library project for St Saviours school.
Cherry Orchard head teacher Maria Hill read about this project and then discussed her own school’s ‘reading chalet’ ambitions with Acorn.
It arose because children did not necessarily want to play outside. With a number of pupils with special educational needs at Cherry Orchard, many were said to find the chaos of a school playground to be a challenging environment.
Funds were raised for the reading chalet itself, but the ABC provided all the books and soft furnishings to create a calm space for the children.
During the Easter holidays, the ABC set to work assembling furniture and stocking shelves with over 650 books donated by the public, and Acorn’s staff and clients.
The whole facility has now been officially opened by the mayor of Greenwich, while the Acorn Group branches continue to act as a collection point for unwanted books, which can be given to other local schools in need of resources.
