Estate agency founder to retire after more than 50 years

John Halman

After more than 50 years in estate agency, Gascoigne Halman chairman John Halman is set to retire at the end of June, bringing to a close a career spanning more than five decades in the property industry.

Halman founded Gascoigne Halman in Wilmslow in 1990 and oversaw the growth of the business from a single office into one of the North West’s largest estate agency networks, with 23 branches across Cheshire, the High Peak and South Manchester.

Throughout his career, he played a central role in expanding the firm’s presence across the region, helping to establish the brand as a major player in the local housing market.

His retirement marks the end of an era for the business he founded more than 35 years ago, having guided its development through changing market conditions and significant growth in the estate agency sector.

Colleagues have paid tribute to Halman’s contribution to both the company and the wider property industry, highlighting the leadership and values that have helped shape the business since its launch in 1990.

The company posted on social media: “We’re proud that John will continue to support the business as Brand Ambassador, ensuring his mentorship and experience remain part of Gascoigne Halman’s future. As we look ahead, Andrew Buckley steps into the role of regional director, working alongside Rebecca Whitehead and Phillip Diggle to lead the next chapter.

“Thank you John for the legacy, leadership and the people-first culture you’ve built.”

Halman, who will now become what Gascoigne Halman refers to as a ‘brand ambassador’, shared his thoughts.

He said: “I am proud of everything we have achieved and the fantastic team of property professionals who represent Gascoigne Halman today.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in the property industry, especially mentoring colleagues and supporting their progression from junior roles into senior leadership positions.

“As the property industry has evolved through technological innovations, Gascoigne Halman has always adapted and grown to meet changing customer expectations.

“I am particularly proud that, while embracing technology, we have always remained focused on what defines a reputable estate agency: great people and a strong commitment to customer service.”
