Cornish agent Jefferys – which once sold tickets for the Titanic – celebrates its 150th birthday this year.
The firm started off in life in 1865 as R. K. Daniel, a shipping agency in St Austell. It was the year that slavery was abolished in the US, and cholera killed over 14,000 people in London.
In 1878 the firm traded as Daniel & Rowse, adding auctioneering and valuations to its shipping activities. In 1911, it added surveying.
The firm later founded one of the biggest livestock markets in the south-west and in 1936 became Venning & Jeffrey, telephone number 45.
By 1974, the firm was describing itself as auctioneers, surveyors, estate agents and valuers, and in 1987 the Jefferys brand was born with branches renovated with new fascias and displays.
Today, Jefferys operates from four offices, but no longer acts as a shipping agency, and is led by David Maskell and John Blake. It still hold auctions, including livestock sales, but no longer sells tickets for ships’ voyages.
