The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has expressed concern the Propertymark Trusts decision to host a puppy yoga session at Prop X Event this month, and it is a view supported by some Propertymark members.

The RSPCA has voiced strong opposition to the trend of puppy yoga, calling it detrimental to animal wellbeing and urging the public to avoid such activities.

The RSPCA has publicly criticised puppy yoga classes, stating in their recent press release that the practice can cause significant distress and harm to puppies. The organisation warns that, while the sessions may appear fun and harmless, the constant handling, bright lights, and noise of a class environment can negatively affect the puppies’ development and mental health.

The RSPCA categorically describes puppy yoga as “animal cruelty,” urging organisers and participants alike to prioritise the welfare of animals over the desire for entertainment.

Paul Halliday, of George Edwards Estate Agents, which is a Propertymark member, is calling for events like Prop X align with ethical standards and reflect respect for animal welfare.

“Introducing puppies to environments where they are repeatedly handled by different individuals can expose them to undue stress,” he said. “Puppies, much like humans, require a calm, consistent environment to develop properly—something incompatible with the transient, unpredictable nature of a yoga class.”

He continued: “As advocates for responsible business practices, we believe it is essential that events like Prop X align with ethical standards and reflect respect for animal welfare. Introducing puppies to environments where they are repeatedly handled by different individuals can expose them to undue stress. Puppies, much like humans, require a calm, consistent environment to develop properly—something incompatible with the transient, unpredictable nature of a yoga class.”

“We hope Propertymark Trust, a respected entity within the property industry, will reconsider its decision and instead focus on providing experiences that do not compromise the wellbeing of animals.

“By supporting ethical practices, we can ensure that events like Prop X lead by example, fostering a culture of responsibility and care for all creatures.

“We encourage the public and the industry to stand with the RSPCA in saying no to puppy yoga and to engage in events that ensure the health and happiness of all participants, including animals.”

Responding, Lauren Scott from the Propertymark Trust commented: “We always listen and take concerns seriously, as it was never an intention to cause distress or unnecessary upset. The aim was to highlight the power and positive contribution animals can make within the service industry and in this case regarding mental health. However, we fully appreciate the points raised and value the fact our proposed setting may not have been the most appropriate stage to promote this message.”

“We genuinely appreciate this concern being brought to our attention and have the utmost respect for individuals and organisations, such as the RSPCA, who tireless work to ensure animal welfare,” she added.
