A British estate agent working in Dubai was jailed after sending an angry Whatsapp message to a car dealer who he believed had ripped him off.
Yaseen Killick, 32, found out that the £6,000 car he had bought had previously been written off.
Killick wrote in his message to the dealer: “How do you sleep at night?”
He thought no more of it until he and his teacher wife Robyn were stopped at the airport as they tried to fly home to London for Christmas.
Police arrested him and he spent three weeks in jail. He and his wife are now back home in south-west London.
Killick said of his ordeal that it had been a nightmare, with “horrific” prison conditions.
There have been a number of cases where British people have been detained in the United Arab States for ‘crimes’, with some cases highlighted on the ‘Detained in Dubai’ website.
A number of UK agents spend time working in Dubai, attracted by high tax-free salaries and the climate. However, there is a very different culture, with harsh penalties for those not respectful of local values.
Estate agency recruiter Josh Rayner said he is not currently filling positions in Dubai, but midlands agent Allsop and Allsop regularly holds recruitment fairs for British estate agents to go and work in Dubai.
Seriously? He sent that in a message and got put in jail? Either I’m missing something or the car dealer is a bit of a snowflake…

There were some British lads in Dubai that hired a car, they went to a restaurant and then opened the boot of the car only to find ‘packages’. They rang the car hire company to let them know and they said stay where you are. Next news is police turn up and throw them in jail FOR 12 MONTHS! They wrote a book called ‘killing time’. You cannot mess about in Dubai at all.
