Boris flagship lettings scheme a flop, say critics

A flagship scheme to get letting agents and landlords voluntarily signed up to a city-wide scheme has fallen flat, it is claimed.

The London Rental Standard, launched by Boris Johnson in May last year, aims to accredit 100,000 agents and landlords by 2016. At launch it was hailed as a template for similar large-scale schemes elsewhere, and numbers ARLA and NALS among its supporters.

But according to the website yesterday, only 14,452 landlords and 339 letting agent firms have signed up.

Research by the Green Party says that the scheme is mentioned in only 0.2% of rental properties posted on Zoopla.

Green London Assembly member Darn Johnson said: “Voluntary accreditation schemes only work if tenants know to look out for the badge, creating demand that landlords might respond to.

“Even the agents who are members of the scheme don’t publicise it.

“The scheme is a flop, and is no substitute for adequate regulations.”

We are members and DO publicise it.  Not that we’ve seen any benefit from it….
