Bad tenants and rogue landlords – plus an agent expelled by the Ombudsman

A new property series launches tonight on Channel 5, Bad Tenants, Rogue Landlords. Judging from its title, you might think that agents wouldn’t be featured –but you’d be wrong.

A companion series to Nightmare Tenants, Slum Landlords, the new programme features cases handled by eviction company Landlord Action.

In tonight’s episode at 8pm, English teacher Muhammad Rahman has suffered serious financial difficulty as his tenant refused to pay rent for over four months. He also finds out that his single tenant has been sub-letting rooms in the property.

Unfortunately, the agent responsible for placing the tenant is letting agent Carterstones in Ilford, Essex, which was expelled by redress scheme the PRS last year.

Paul Shamplina, founder of Landlord Action, said: “Mr Rahman fell victim not just to a rogue letting agent, but also a rogue tenant, which made this case particularly distressing.

“With mounting rent arrears and a mortgage to pay, Muhammad and his family were forced to live in cramped conditions in one small room at his brother’s house along with his brother’s family, including four children, and take a second job to cover the costs.

“This was part of an organised sub-letting gang, and when we discovered the sub-tenants hidden in a room upstairs during the High Court eviction, the atmosphere became particularly hostile.

“The police were called and the matter was dealt with, but I hope this scene acts as a reminder to landlords not to try and deal with situations like this without seeking professional help.”

In other stories on the show, a bedsit fire exposes a negligent landlord in north-west London, while a landlord in Cheshire is shocked to hear that squatters are living in his property.

  1. Fraudvigilant

Thought his family were renting their tower Hamlets council home out. He’s local and is hardly struggling. What a liar. Not surprised fraud playing victim of fraud.
