Are you up to speed with changes in the Right to Rent scheme?

The temporary changes to Right to Rent checks, adapted due to coronavirus, are designed to make it easier for landlords and appointed agents to carry them out.

The short-term changes to the scheme, which requires landlords to check that all tenants who occupy their properties have legal status to live in the UK, have meant that for the past few months, the Home Office has not required landlords to see original documents. Instead, it currently allows checks to be undertaken over video calls.

These temporary changes, which have been in place for several months, mean that during the coronavirus outbreak prospective renters are now able to submit scanned documents, rather than originals, to show they have a right to rent or right to work.

Further adjustments are set to be made to the Right To Rent system – possibly next month – with a view to making it easier for landlords to complete the process, and for prospective tenant to view their official Home Office profile, which they can share with the landlord if they wish to.

In addition, the Right to Rent regime for B5JSSK nationals will be altered. These are people with nationalities from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and South Korea.

To help landlord and agents better understand what is required of them when it comes to Right to Rent, Fixflo is hosting a webinar tomorrow.

The ‘Important Changes to Right to Rent’ masterclass will take place from 11am.

It will feature Rajeev Nayyar, MD of Fixflo, Right to Rent expert, Gareth Fowler, who is MD at Keysafe, as well as regulatory law specialist, David Smith, who is a partner at JMW Solicitors.

Attendees will have a chance to pose questions directly to the esteemed panel.
