Agents beware – Rightmove valuation scam is doing the rounds

An agent is warning others of a scam that looks as though it could be targeting Rightmove users.

Shaun Loughlin, director of The Manchester Estate Agent, yesterday received a valuation request via Rightmove for a property in London – which raised suspicions.

He told us: “After asking some further questions the person came back via email with a link to view the valuation. This immediately set the alarm bells ringing as our email servers blocked the link.

“After using my phone to click on the link knowing there was no risk, it appears the link takes you to a Google Drive log-in page which clearly is not through Google, so as to their intentions I do not know, but this is clearly a scam targeting agents via Rightmove.”

Rightmove yesterday evening confirmed it knows of the scam. A spokesperson said: “We have a dedicated team at Rightmove who deal with anything of this nature, and they have blocked the sender and sent out the below communication to those agents who received an email from this sender.

“As the agent mentions, this potential phishing link was sent to them on email after the agent responded to a lead they received, not within the initial Rightmove lead itself.”

Rightmove has sent out a warning which tells agents not to click on suspicious leads, and to delete the email immediately.

The warning says: “We’ve been made aware that some agents have been sent a link to a potential phishing site after they respond via email to a Rightmove lead.

“You should not open the link in the email.”

Please be on your guard. The next email might be asking a Manchester agent for a Manchester valuation, or a London agent for a London valuation.

Had one of these yesterday from a buyer who emailed via RM and then sent an attachment with his requirements…..guessed it was dodgy but I’ve had years of IT experience, so please inform all your junior negs etc who may just think it’s the real deal.

Looking at my latest RM invoice I think I can see where the real scam is.

We had something similar yesterday via Zoopla so it’s not only RM – be aware! The enquiry came through from a “Shawn Billy” with what was obviously a duff phone number but an email address, simply stating that he was looking for properties in our area. My colleague emailed asking for more info in terms of what he was looking for and for a contact number and got an almost identical email to the one in the story above. Fortunately he was savvy enough to realise that something wasn’t right and didn’t click the link.
