An agent has issued a “whole-hearted” apology after sending a flyer to residents showing a picture of the local Cenotaph with the word SOLD above it.
Entwistle Green, a Countrywide brand, sent the leaflet in an attempt to get more listings in the Victoria Park area of Widnes, Cheshire.
However, the picture chosen was of the park’s magnificent war memorial.
The letter said three homes had been sold in the vicinity by the company with the properties attracting 53 viewings and 24 offers.
Two people who received the flyer contacted the local paper to complain that it was disrespectful.
Entwistle Green responded by distributing letters to apologise.
Rob Ablewhite, branch manager, said: “Realising our error, we wrote to all the affected households within 24 hours to relay our apologies.
“As a long-standing local business we are deeply saddened that our error in judgement was seen as disrespectful and we would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any distress caused as this was not our intention.
“We hope that you will accept our whole-hearted apology.”

People love being offended nowadays. On the flipside, plenty of PR. Maybe we should all be more insensitive with our ads?!

Admittedly not going to win an award for ‘Best Thought-Through Flyer of the Year’ – but I would suggest that only two complaints received is a measure of the public’s opinion as to whether it was a heinous act or not.
Sensitivity settings vary from person to person, dependent upon their own life experiences. You can and will never please all of the people all of the time, unfortunately.
Lesson learned for EG, I guess – or at least I hope…
