The Green Party’s deputy leader owns two buy-to-let properties despite his party backing policies that seek to reduce private landlordism.

Mothin Ali, co-deputy leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, owns two rental properties in Leeds, according to The Sunday Times.

Ali, 44, is also a Leeds city councillor and represents the Gipton and Harehills ward.

Ali owns the properties through MA Holdings, a private limited company he incorporated in December 2021. He is the company’s sole director.

According to the report, he bought a three-bedroom former council house in Gipton for £165,000 in June 2022.

He acquired a second property in the area for £157,000 in March 2025. Both reportedly have buy-to-let mortgages and tenants.

Green Party landlord policy

The disclosure follows the Green Party’s adoption of a policy last year to reduce private landlordism.

Its proposals include tax changes intended to make owning multiple rental properties less profitable. The party says its approach would increase home ownership and reduce reliance on private landlords.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has also criticised the existing private rental market. Earlier this year, he argued that landlords treated tenants as “cash cows”.

Party responds to buy-to-let disclosure

The Green Party said Ali owns the properties because of his responsibilities towards vulnerable close family members.

A party spokesman said: “We have provided deeply personal information to The Sunday Times in confidence which shows that councillor Ali has acted solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members for whom he has caring responsibilities.

“At councillor Ali’s request, we are not going to make this information public to protect his family.”

Ali reportedly declined to disclose how much rent he charges for the properties.

The disclosure is likely to attract attention from landlords and letting agents. The Green Party has advocated significant changes to the private rented sector and taxation of property investors.
