The Green Party’s deputy leader owns two buy-to-let properties despite the party backing policies designed to reduce the role of private landlords.
Mothin Ali, co-deputy leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, owns two rental properties in Leeds, according to The Sunday Times.
Ali, 44, is also a Leeds city councillor and represents the Gipton and Harehills ward.
The properties are held through MA Holdings, a private limited company incorporated in December 2021. Ali is the company’s sole director.
According to the report, he bought a three-bedroom former council house in Gipton for £165,000 in June 2022.
He acquired a second property in the area for £157,000 in March 2025. Both properties reportedly have buy-to-let mortgages and are believed to have tenants.
The disclosure comes after the Green Party adopted a policy last year aimed at reducing private landlordism.
Its policy includes using tax changes to make it less profitable to own multiple properties for rent. The party has framed the proposals around increasing home ownership and reducing tenants’ reliance on private landlords.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski has also been critical of the existing private rental market. Earlier this year, he argued that tenants were being treated as “cash cows”.
The Green Party said Ali’s circumstances were connected to his responsibilities towards close family members.
A party spokesman said: “We have provided deeply personal information to The Sunday Times in confidence which shows that councillor Ali has acted solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members for whom he has caring responsibilities.
“At councillor Ali’s request, we are not going to make this information public to protect his family.”
Ali reportedly declined to disclose the rent charged on the properties.
The disclosure is likely to attract attention from landlords and letting agents given the Green Party’s position on the private rented sector and taxation of property investors.
