Chestertons boss Robert Bartlett to run gruelling Marathon des Sables

Robert Bartlett, CEO of Chestertons, is to run the equivalent of six marathons in the notorious Marathon des Sables.

Taking place in the Sahara desert from April 3 to 13, Bartlett is hoping to raise £20,000 for Walking With The Wounded, a charity that supports the re-education and re-training of wounded servicemen and women.

The race, which has a dropout rate of over 50%, starts on Bartlett’s 50th birthday.

Bartlett competed with the Great Britain rowing team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, but is new to running and until this year had never run in a competitive race before.

He said: “The race will be one of the toughest sporting events I have ever faced but my eye is firmly on the goal, which is to raise funds for a very good cause.”

Bartlett broke his upper arm while training for the event.

He said: “The fracture to the ball of my upper arm was an extreme setback as it prevented me from continuing with my training for eight weeks, although I did compete in my one and only half marathon with it broken before I had been properly diagnosed!”

Now in its 30th year, Marathon des Sables attracts over 1,000 runners, 200 members of the press and a support management team of over 400 people.
