Deposit scheme warns of ‘danger of falling foul of the law’ as tenant fees ban approaches

The Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) has reported a boom in visits to its DepositCap.com website as landlords and letting agents rush to ensure they are compliant ahead of the tenant fees ban.

The ban comes in on Saturday and the TDS says it has had 17,000 unique visits to the online resource since launch last month.

The website provides information on how the fee ban works and a calculator to work out how much deposit a landlord or agent can take under the new five-week cap.

Steve Harriott, chief executive of TDS, said: “The number of visits that we’ve had to the website, in only a month, shows that there is a huge appetite for clear information and guidance on how to comply with the changes and avoid possible fines or prosecution.

“Agents and landlords are in real danger of falling foul of the law if they don’t make themselves aware of the implications of the new rules.

“We’re doing everything we can to make things as easy as possible for everyone to not only understand how the legislation affects them but also enabling agents and landlords a simple online solution to quickly and securely adjust the value of the deposits in line with the new legislation.

“Educating our customers and members on their responsibilities is paramount and we strive to make the processes of deposit protection simple, quick and efficient.”

The Deposit Protection Service also has a calculator to help agents work out whether deposits on tenancies that started before June 1 will still comply once they are up for renewal after the cap is introduced.

The worst bodge of technology to fix a simple coding solution to return deposits over 5 weeks. The DPS should be ashamed of themselves.
