Developer rapped by watchdog after service charges for buyers soared 19%

A brochure for a new development which gave estimated service charges and the cost of parking infuriated a previous buyer, who had paid more.

The brochure, for a Ballymore development, was seen in January and gave £1.59 per sq ft per annum as its estimated service charge for townhouses.

It quoted car parking at £308 per space per year.

The complainant went to the Advertising Standards Authority.

Ballymore told the ASA that it was typical for the service charge to fluctuate in the first few years.

The original £1.59 estimate was based on a 2014 budget.

Since then, Ballymore had adjusted the estimate upwards to £1.89.

Ballymore also acknowledged that the car parking charge had changed.

The ASA upheld the complaint against Ballymore, saying that the 19% increase in service charge was “significant”.
