Former Rightmove marketing boss joins Robert May’s Rummage business

A former marketing manager at Rightmove has been taken on by Robert May’s Rummage business amid growing speculation as to whether it could be the new Rightmove, and what it will mean for the industry.

Suzanne Deakins said that specific details on the Rummage4Property project are not yet available, but that the “as yet undisclosed solution will offer agents and developers a level playing field for winning instructions and promoting both properties and brands at a hyper-local level”.

Deakins, who was one of Rightmove’s first employees, was responsible for all marketing at the portal, and was there for almost six years. She then joined the Guardian Media Group’s property services business as head of group marketing, again staying almost six years. After its sale to Zoopla, she promoted the software acquisitions, including Vebra, Core and CFP.

As head of marketing in her new role, she joins Russell King, formerly of Zoopla and CFP, in the run-up to what she says will be “an industry restorer”.

Rummage4.it and the .property that exist at the moment aren’t the system, they’re a simple way to interrogate multiple sites and  test veracious search.  Don’t try looking for the actual system it’s hidden.

All the very best of luck and a testament to what Robert and his team have built that he is able to attract top industry people to his team. An incredible product and service that has had chins hitting the floor wherever it has been demonstrated and, is now seeing at least one major portal trying to play copy and catchup. I’m not easily impressed and I’m more than happy to call BS where I see it. This is not one of those occasions.

Great to see a product designed from the ground up to help the independent industry, rather than make the most money for it’s founders.

The more quality people joining the team to help promote rummage4property, the better. Great news.

Sorry to disappoint V but when I said I was levelling the playing field that is what I’ve done and although you won’t thank me for it you will thank me for it as including corporate agents and housebuilders is vital to the commercial success of a project of this scale.

Like the  utility  companies I can’t side with one firm and not another,  I have devised a level fee structure that will treat the larger firms the same the micro agent who sells 12 properties a year. I’m concerned some of the AIM listed firms won’t like the structure as their definition of #local might work against my own more … logical definition.

What I have built is genuinely equitable and I have already turned down a life changing wad of money for exclusivity. That might well be something I should regret but I have a unique outlook that says level the playing field now go and compete on service.

Independent agency is tougher than you think, independent agents know what to do in this market but they do need  some help. If all I do is halt the aggressive and unwarranted rise in subscriptions that will be enough for me but I suspect  together we might achieve a bit more than that.

Suzanne  has been in place for a week and will now begin the process of explaining what we’ve built and how we believe it will help you. We are going to start with a case study  of an agent that’s benefited from using the system for the past 30 months. I’m proud of what we have done for that agency, they’re grateful.

As a regular reader of EYE from Day one, I take the view that Robert May is the most credible, objective and interesting contributor.

The industry desperately needs an alternative to RM, together with a medium to promote standards of excellence.

This proposed initiative from Robert is great news – Count me in please and I anticipate many, many more will want to jump on board.

    Show of hands please!

Easy to impress Estate Agents with buzzwords and confusion. Somebody independent, with a critical eye and years of software development experience, less so.

I offered to put Robert in touch with such a person but he declined.

      I await detail with interest.

Thank you for all your words of encouragement and support for the Rummage4 venture which I am hugely excited to be a part of.  Just to quell the rumours though, we are not going head to head with the portals but are working on a proposition that will compliment all of your digital advertising. Our goal will be to raise an agents profile at a local level and put your brand and ownership of your property details at the forefront. We look forward to sharing more details very soon.

I would like to see a truly independent opinion of what this actually does, Robert has tweeted some supposedly unbiased reviews, however they are from some of his staunch anti Purplebricks associates so this really doesn’t hold much water.

But they did say it was ‘a game changer’ 🙂 whatever else.

I’m sure you’ll have plenty of opportunity to express criticism of this business once more details are revealed.

I’m certainly not an ‘associate’ and have no axe to grind with Purplebricks and alike – regardless of all the investment they have not made any meaningful progress in our area of operation, I was merely wishing a guy who always seems to conduct himself well on here the best with a new venture.

I imagine someone has to be pretty cynical to criticise a very brief piece about the appointment of a Head of Marketing to a new property business which is yet to unveil its product.

I think it’s pretty apt, these grandiose statements without any substance are continually spouted by the originator.

Here is one from 2 weeks ago, pure ‘hyperbole’

‘I’m sat on about £1b almost uncontested annual revenue for landlords, about £100m for their agents and have the analysis that explains how.

Fees ban a worry? I have a solution.’
