Campaigners issue eviction notices to councillors

Tenancy rights campaigners have issued spoof eviction notices to every single councillor on a local authority, telling them to get out of their homes.

The group, Digs, has targeted 57 councillors in Hackney, London, saying they want to highlight the threat of eviction hanging over vulnerable residents.

The group also wants local tenants to be involved in the design of a new private rented sector licensing scheme.

The fake Section 21 notices tell the councillors to quit their homes by September 4, because their landlord “Simon Sleaziton of Richershire” wants the properties.

The demonstration comes as rents go up on the New Era housing estate in Hoxton in which the family of Tory MP Richard Benyon have shares.

Digs – which has previously taken part in demonstrations at letting agencies – criticised Section 21, saying that they could be used to execute so-called “revenge evictions”.

The fake Section 21 notices came with letters which said: “There are people, including the ill, the old and children, living in dangerous living situations with damp, mould, lack of heating, broken fixtures or shoddy wiring.

“But these tenants won’t report the problems, as a complaint to a landlord can lead to eviction.”
