Man behind allAgents review site to keep his landlord licence after jail sentence

Vincent Friel, the letting agent behind agents review site allAgents, has been allowed to keep his licence to continue as a private landlord.

Friel, who owns 1-2-Let lettings agency in Glasgow and Edinburgh and who has said he invested a six-figure sum into allAgents, was jailed earlier this year.

He was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving of a pedestrian on a pedestrian crossing in Glasgow and seriously injuring a second. His claim was that he had fainted at the wheel of the car, after taking medication including Viagra.

In March, he was jailed for three years and banned from driving for five years.

Friel is appealing his conviction and the city council has allowed him to continue as a landlord. In Scotland, all landlords must be licensed.

One newspaper reports that there was a split vote with the committee chairman, Frank Docherty, declaring an interest.

The same committee struck off a landlord who received public money to house asylum seekers in her property.

She was banned for seven months after selling counterfeit tobacco.

Fiona McCabe told the hearing that ten of her 11 properties were let via Orchard & Shipman, a property management firm which started out as a conventional lettings firm in the south-east before expanding into local authority work.

While I do not agree with running someone over on a pedestrian crossing, I don’t see the real connection with being a bad landlord. Was it an accident or is there more to the story as to the motive/attitude of having run someone over, indicating mentally his “fit and proper person” to be questionable?
