Posting etiquette on EYE: A gentle reminder

Some readers have asked if we have changed our rules regarding posts.

The short answer is that we haven’t.

The large majority of posts are absolutely fine and often a pleasure to read. The posts are generally lively and well-informed contributions to EYE which have helped make the site what it is.

It has also been good to see quite a number of new posters recently – welcome!

However, we will continue to remove the tiny minority of comments which could be legally problematic, both for EYE and, importantly, the poster.

This means taking down those which contain personal insults; and in particular those which make accusations of fraud, misrepresentation and/or lying.

I take down posts as rarely as possible as I strongly believe this site is about free speech, but please – for your own sakes – be careful how you express your opinions, even if you honestly feel they are well-founded.

I also take down, or edit out, plugs and links to someone’s business. The bad language filter sorts out the swear words (and a few others as well, which has led to some jocularity).

I take a particularly close look at posts on new businesses, featured here from time to time, simply because I know how disheartening negativity can be to someone who has spent commitment and money on something they believe in.

I almost never take down posts critical of EYE itself. These include posts which tell me that a story into which I have poured heart and soul is pointless, a waste of time and a non-news story, and suggest the editor has no idea what she’s talking about. Or has accepted money to write it, or is in the pocket of an advertiser.

The first may well be correct. As for the other two, I haven’t, honestly! And I’m not.

A huge ‘thank you’ Ros on behalf of the hundreds of readers who make PIE a regular destination for the latest industry news and information. I know how hard you all work to keep it legal, honest and decent and ensure that the articles are amusing as well as informative. Thank you too to the sponsors who enable all this to be done for free!

You, Nick, Andrew and your expanding army of contributors put yourselves and your site out there to help inform an industry often confused by the lack of reliable, objective data. Contributions should and often do lead to informed debate and long may it continue. Congratulations on creating such an objective and positive destination and for the hours of hard work that goes into making it so popular.

I wish the regular contributors who appear day after day in the ‘septic tank’ that seems to exist below each article had the same high standards and honesty. It’s a dark and toxic place inhabited by anonymous, irrelevant folk who bash out their bile sitting in the underpants in their back bedrooms in the naive belief that someone else might be interested.

Please – can you make a space for real people whose reputations provide them with a platform of credibility for their views (especially those who hold a different view) & leave the bacteria of postings to other less credible websites?

I would like to clarify that whilst I am anonymous and irrelevant, I am without fail always fully naked when bashing out my bile and definitely not in my underpants.

Have I REALLY just read that?

    Good to have the clarity.

I guess some of the sensitive souls as demonstrated above (ironic) see this more as a sales website as opposed to a news and debate website.

Rather strange post by Henry. On one hand commending Rosa and her crew of operating  a splendid site which I wholeheartedly  agree and then  refers to commetators as a “septic tank”  somehow implying that the staff  dont monitor the comments and root out the  personal insults which he himself   has now  posted .You couldnt make it up  In addition over exaggerating the extent of the effect on foreign buyers of some minor isloated everyday  zenophobic incidents either which is relatively small potatoes compared to other major cities in the world isnt particulalry objective either

Is there an offence for persistently misrepresenting your business to your shareholders and the stock exchange?

In the spirit of not directing personal insults…

SOME PEOPLE want to remember that a septic tank without bacteria is just a pit of 5h!t.

It is wholly dependent upon aforementioned lower life to function.

Ok so this just happened. Dude lets play a game where you post something sh*tty about sh*tty posts you once read and I get to tell you how sh*tty that is. Think about it and let me know when you’re all caught up. Jeez is this little ad hominem for repeating at cocktail parties or do you genuinely think PIE should hand pick and hermetically seal its posters for the sake of relevance and credibility? So what if we sometimes act like we just realised we’re down to our last sheet of Rizla. Ok maybe thats just me but dude if I knew the identity of every poster I’d like totally murder them in a Purge. Awesome.
