Another council to go ahead with blanket licensing of all rental properties

Another London council is rolling out a blanket licensing scheme of all rented properties across its borough, despite nearly 2,000 objections.

Enfield Council had decided last month to launch the scheme, which will mean landlords having to pay £500 per property for a five-year licence.

The decision was then called in for review by the council’s overview and scrutiny committee.

Landlord Edgar Meto presented a petition with 1,925 signatures, and other landlords at the meeting voiced their anger, saying they would be forced to pass on the costs of licensing to their tenants.

However, the committee decided to press ahead with the scheme, and it is due to come into effect next April.

Enfield Council is citing anti-social behaviour as the reason for wanting the scheme. There are some 27,500 private rented homes in the borough – about 20% of all homes.

Not knowing all the facts on this case did anyone do the research?

We had the threat of licensing hanging over us in the Milton Keynes area and I produced a document outlining the reason why it should not go ahead and if it did, what could be done to minimise the impact.

Using facts and figures, instead of hot air and bluster, defeated the proposal 🙂

It won't be long before all boroughs are doing it. Barking and Dagenham have only produced the documents to apply for the license and then the responsibility is firmly in the landlord/agent s hands. Money for old rope with hefty fines for those guilty of non – complience.

It's just a council scheme to raise money and I highly doubt much of the money raised will go to combat the minority of rogue landlords in the sector.

Also, as stated in the article, landlords would just pass on the costs of licensing to their tenants so the only people these really affects are the tenants.
