Completed sales dip over summer, says taxman – but up annually

There were 110,840 residential property transactions during September, HMRC has reported.

The figure compares with 110,980 in August and 120,300 in July.

The figure is up on September last year, when there were 105,170 transactions.

The figures are all unadjusted and differ from the “seasonally adjusted” figures which HMRC seems to prefer.

The seasonally adjusted figures were also seized upon by other commentators, who said they showed an uplift.

    Really?

In my area, using Land Registry Data (which is of course 3 months behind reality), transaction levels for the area as a whole are 21.49% down compared to this time last year.

They are 20.78% below the average between 2004 and 2014 again measured against this date each year.

People are just not putting their properties on the market.
