Estate and letting agents frequently rely on locksmiths, whether for key cutting, lock changes or urgent call-outs at managed properties. However, a new report warns that rogue locksmith scams are increasing, with some operators advertising low prices before charging customers hundreds of pounds once work is underway.
“The main tactic used is a bait and switch, where the scammers will provide a very cheap quote but will quickly find expensive add-ons as soon as they arrive at the job. This is extremely frustrating for customers.
“This is why it’s so important for people to be aware of the warning signs and red flags.
“We strongly believe more needs to be done at an industry level to stop people being caught out. Locksmiths who deliberately mislead and overcharge customers need to face stricter regulations and punishments. Stronger enforcement and clearer standards would help customers to avoid fraudsters and instead support legitimate locksmiths who want to provide a good service.”
