Suffolk Trading Standards has published a letter that it is about to send out to over 200 estate and letting agents across the county.
The letter acts as a warning to remind agents of recent changes to their legal obligations, including the requirement now enshrined in law for letting agents to display fees, and to do so inclusive of VAT. Where sales agents show fees, these must also be shown as VAT-inclusive.
The letter also draws agents’ attention to the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, saying that agents must not make misleading omissions when describing properties.

Let’s hope that agents read it thoroughly. The very first agent that Eye turned up completely at random and without any prior knowledge, was an independent lettings business in Ipswich which at the weekend was displaying its fees to tenants as plus VAT.
May as well put the letters straight in the recycle box and save 200 envelopes. The people who abuse the law will continue to do so for short term gains and until someone hits their pocket with legal action their show will go on
