Agents ‘forecast industry damage’ if Labour wins election

Seven in ten letting agents believe that landlords would quit the industry if Labour wins the General Election and implements its plans for the private rented sector.

ARLA members came out strongly against Labour’s plans to introduce three-year tenancy agreements and rent controls, and to make it more difficult to evict tenants.

Lettings business Rentify put landlords’ opposition to Labour’s plans at an even more marked degree.

In a poll of 1,205 landlords, it found support for Labour running at just 19%.

Almost half (45%) said they would vote Conservative.

Rentify’s survey also suggests that landlords who previously voted for Labour or the Lib Dems are now switching to Ukip. A total of 19% of landlords would vote for Labour, compared with 17% for Ukip and 6% for the Lib Dems.

    It is not just labour wanting to bring in rent control The Greens and the Liberals are also on the same track. The Conservative also seem hell bent on increasing legislation and controls.  If you are a landlord and don’t want your interests damaged it is not leaving you much choice Conservative or UKIP are the two only viable alternatives. Of course there are more tenants than landlords which is why  the main parties are generally pitching  their policies towards tenants. Most tenants will not appreciate that more controls or regulation will result in either higher rents or reduced supply (which will also drive up rents!)  So  it is not good for tenant either. Of course the rogue landlords will ignore everything anyway!

    Before the Conservatives put the suggestion of a sub-letting clause into the Budget I felt they were a very strong choice, when it came to Property at least (Property obviously being hugely important as one of the main sources of our economic income). Labour’s plans sound disastrous and poorly researched all over. In the end, I’ll probably end up voting Conservative as the lesser of two evils and hope that the ridiculous sub-letting proposal is shot down before it gets anywhere.

    Re: Andy W’s comment on sub-letting clause:- to introduce that proposal without any consultation is FUNDAMENTALLY wrong by Conservatives!!!

    They obviously haven’t considered its implications! Worrying, this is likely to be a flavour of more to come. Introduce legal changes first – see what the response is – then, IF the justifiable outcry is loud enough, they’ll THEN maybe address the issues after the event – so they can be seen to be “listening to the

    public”.
