Going up – number of new homes in England rises by 10%

The number of new homes in England grew by 10% – or 136,610 – over the last year.

The Department for Communities and Local Government says there were: 130,340 new homes; 4,470 new homes created from conversations; 12,520 new homes resulting from change of use; and 1,330 other gains.

A total of 12,060 homes were lost through demolition.

The total figure of 136,610 compares with a peak of 223,530 new dwellings in 2007/8.

The number of new homes built, at 130,340, is the largest since 2008/9 when there were 157,630.
